“Remember us… when I can’t”
There is one thing that is always guaranteed whenever I pick up one of Emma Scott’s stories and that is it will be nothing short of astounding. If there is one writer who always has the ability to make me feel each and every emotion through the portrayal of her beautiful and captivating words, it’s Emma. I can never get enough of her stories and A Five-Minute Life is by no means an exception. I think this may be one of the best books I have ever read; I can’t fault it in any way, shape or form. It is pure literary perfection and I thank Emma from the bottom of my heart for bringing this unique, heartbreaking, fascinating and utterly spellbinding story to life. Unfortunately, no review I attempt to write will do this story any justice, because I was literally catapulted to an unknown world that I have never experienced and was fully immersed in the effortless and impeccable storytelling that Emma always produces.
Thea is a young, up and coming artist with so much talent. She has her whole life is in front of her until one harrowing accident changes the world as she knows it. She is left with a debilitating brain injury that causes memory loss with an inability to remember recent events; she can remember everything prior to the accident, but now her memories last only for a mere five minutes.
“You don’t have enough to keep loving me. Only five minutes.”
“That’s all I need. That’s all I ever needed.”
When Thea meets the beautiful and broken Jimmy, any sort of connection appears impossible considering Thea’s brain injury. When they connect on such a profound level, five minutes will pass, and Thea has forgotten Jimmy and his kind eyes. It was such a unique relationship; every time they met and connected, for Thea, it felt like the first time. They were drawn to each other by some unexplainable magnetic force and they saw something in each other that goes above and beyond anything anyone else one can see.
“The silence in my mind is defeated by his voice. My eyes close. I’m so tired. It’s safe to sleep now because Jim is coming with me.
He’ll follow me into the darkness.”
I absolutely devoured this story and drank in all the beautiful words that Emma perfected so exquisitely. A Five-Minute Life is unlike anything else I have read to date and I know this is one story I will never forget. This heartbreaking and powerful journey showcased to me the importance of persevering even when faced with the worst kind of adversity. Life is sometimes cruel and unfair, but the strength and tenacity that Thea and Jimmy portrayed is nothing short of inspiring. I cannot recommend this story enough as A Five-Minute Life has the power to change your life. This was simply an epic and unforgettable masterpiece that should be read by the world.

Our hero Jim was a true gentleman. Having meet Thea after her accident he never knew the real Thea, but along the way you can see their connection ignite.
