‘With Us’ was my first read by this author and while I didn’t love it, I enjoyed it and I’m looking forward to read more from her. Layla Frost delivers an intriguing, sexy, yet very sweet story filled with just a little bit of everything. If you love your heroes to be tall, dark and handsome and a little dangerous, then you don’t want to miss this one, because trust me, Theo Amato was exactly that and more.
Dahlia had a hard life growing up. Moving from a fostering home to another, without a real family or any guidance, wasn’t easy for her. She doesn’t have friends, working two jobs to make ends meet. One day at the coffee chop she works at, she meets Theo, a sexy, Italian man who for some reason seems interested with her. Theo is like no other man Dahlia met before, so she can’t believe a man like him, mature and sophisticated wants something meaningful with her.
Theo wants Dahlia. He wants to get to know her and to have her in his bed and he’s willing to do anything to accomplish that. But Dahlia as much as she’s intrigued by Theo, doesn’t exactly trust him. She accepts to go on a date with him, eventually starting a relationship with this sexy, intimidating man who apparently wants to offer her everything. Dahlia meets Theo’s family, Theo being very open with her about everything…well, almost everything since he keeps some secrets from her, secrets that can destroy everything he came to love.
This is all you have to know about Theo and Dahlia’s story, so try not to read too many spoiler-ish reviews. ‘With Us’ was well written and I actually enjoyed the author’s storytelling a lot. Filled with action, intrigue and suspense the story will keep you at the edge of your seat for a good part of the story, which I have to say had flowed nicely.
The two main characters were endearing and well portrayed. Theo was a wonderful hero that I must admit charmed me from the very beginning. He was sexy and mysterious and overall and intriguing character. I loved the way he was with Dahlia from the very beginning. Sweet, caring, patient and considerate from the moment he met our heroine, Theo is determined to give her everything she missed in her life – support, freedom, hope, family and last, but not least, love. And I have to say I liked how he do it. The way he was with Dahlia at times was really heartwarming, his tenderness made me fall for him very fast. Dahlia was a likeable heroine I enjoyed reading about, but her character’s development was not as good as Theo’s IMO. In some way, I expected a little more from her character.
I loved these two together. They were great together, a little sugary sweet at times, but I enjoyed reading about them as a couple. What I would have changed was how their relationship progressed. Personally, I think their relationship would have been more plausible with some back and forth, but this is just my opinion. The story is filled with drama and angst, but nothing overwhelming, which I liked and plenty of sexy times that were quite well written.
The story was okay for the most part, but I have to say it dragged a little. Also, the unnecessarily details about…everyone and everything, got on my nerves more than I want to admit. I was so annoyed I was tempted to skim…I didn’t, but I was very close.
Overall, a great read!
About the Author:
Layla Frost has always been a rebel. A true badass.
Growing up, Layla used to hide under her blanket with a flashlight to read the Sweet Valley High books she pilfered from her older sister. It wasn’t long before she was reading hidden Harlequins during class at school. This snowballed into pulling all-nighters after the promise of “just one more chapter”.
Her love of reading, especially the romance genre, took root early and has grown immeasurably.
In between reading and writing, Layla spends her free time rocking out(at concerts, on the couch, in the car… Anywhere is a stage if you get into it enough), watching TV(the nerdier the better!), and being a foodie. Though she lives in NY(the state, not the city), she’s an avid Red Sox fan.
